I have a LT 160 mower with a hydrostatic transmission. It works fine when cold but as it heats up it won't work in reverse and when hot slows in foward with fluid running off the transmission and the fluid level over full. No fluid has been added in years, could a filter be stopped up?

Drain the system and replace all filter(s) and clean the screens. Your tractor is in need of a little attention. After changing the filter and cleaning the intake screen, make sure you change the hydro fluid. You should notice a big difference.

If there is a hydro fluid cooling system, make sure it is clear of debris. Often times, a little fluid and dirt can really build up the crud on the transmission, and the cooler if it has one. Give the whole machine a good cleaning, let the poor thing breath ....

Every HST I have owned has required a fluid and filter change every 200 hours or so. If you have run it for years it is probably way overdue.

Oil does break down over time, especially when overheated. ....
